History
The Ben Nevis distillery is located just outside Fort William, amidst the dramatic landscape of the West Highlands and beneath the mountain sharing its name.
Its history can be traced back to 1825. However, it experienced a turbulent past until it was purchased by Japanese distiller Nikka. This was a strategic decision, as Nikka had been purchasing malt from the distillery for blending into its own Japanese whisky brands.
Production and Distillation
Production has now reached 2 million litres, with a fermentation time of 48 hours. Under Nikka’s management, a visitor centre has opened, and the entire facility has been renovated.
The distillation process is slow and steady, yielding a rich, full-bodied new make spirit. This characteristic allows the whisky to age exceptionally well in Sherry Butts. Consequently, Ben Nevis whisky is quite scarce in the marketplace.
Market and Investment Perspectives
Ben Nevis has reaped benefits from the increasing popularity of Japanese whisky, as a significant portion of its malt contributes to the production of these renowned brands, resulting in a fair share of reflected glory. From an investment standpoint, its malt is of high quality and reasonably priced. If any casks become available, particularly sherry butts, they are definitely worth acquiring.
