Conduct Your Research
Before considering buying a cask, please thoroughly research and compare the company from which you intend to purchase. Ensure that the company has three years of solvency at the Companies House in the UK and holds the latest accounts. Also, understand the price, legality, business practices, accounts, office location, and company history.
Fully Understand Cask Trading
Make sure you fully understand all the procedures and details of cask trading, including bottling options, auctions, and buy-back offers from the company.
Establish a Diversified Cask Portfolio
Consider the holding time and budget of the cask, and avoid buying multiple casks from the same year and distillery. If you plan to buy multiple casks, choose different distilleries and ages. This can help to reduce risk and increase investment flexibility.
Confirm Naming Rights of the Cask
Understand whether the cask you want to buy has naming rights, which will affect the value of the cask. A cask from the same distillery sold under a different name will not hold the same value as a cask identified with the original brand name.
Confirm Cask Management License
Do not buy whisky casks stored from companies without the correct licenses such as WOWGR.
Ensure Cask Samples Can Be Provided
Cask samples are crucial for regular monitoring of the health status of the cask, please ensure that cask samples can be provided after purchase. It is even more ideal if cask samples can be tasted in advance before purchase.
