Bunnahabhain Distillery

Bunnahabhain, pronounced as “Boonahhav*enn”, translates to ‘Mouth of the River’. Nestled on Islay’s rugged north coast, this distillery was founded in 1881 by whisky blenders Robertson & Baxter. They not only constructed the distillery but also established a small community for their workers, complete with housing and a road with a pier for connectivity.

The Whisky Journey

Bunnahabhain’s whisky soon became a core ingredient for renowned blends like Black Bottle, Famous Grouse, and Cutty Sark. The production doubled during the 1960s whisky boom, and today they have a capacity of 2.7 million litres, divided approximately into 1/3 peated and 2/3 unpeated. They have notably increased the phenol specification to 35-45ppm, similar to Laphroaig which is 45ppm.

Single Malt Whisky

Under the ownership of Distell International, the focus has shifted towards promoting Bunnahabhain as a Single Malt brand. The brand has seen significant success, with the core range now including 12, 18, 25, and 40-year-old whiskies, along with a variety of exciting limited editions.

Potential

The brand’s success is evident in its 160% sales increase over the past few years, boosted by excellent repackaging and innovative marketing. The brand’s equity is also on a fast-rising path.

One of the Independent Bottler’s Favourites

Bunnahabhain is highly regarded by Independent Bottlers, with over 3000 Independent Bottlings to date. This is significant for investors as these bottling companies could be potential buyers for your purchased cask, forming a crucial part of your exit strategy.

Bunnahabhain has steadily clinched a top spot among distilleries in recent years. With heavy investments from its owners to ensure future growth, it undeniably makes a valuable addition to any portfolio.
